Why do people believe there is credibility in numbers?

Why do people believe that a large number of people doing something, or believing something increases the chances that this "thing" is good/true/right?

People will often use the argument of "Well the majority of people do this/think this so there must be a reason!!" Which is basically the same argument your 5-year-old uses when he/she says "Everyone else is doing it!!"

Even as a kid I was always an independent thinker and I have never understood "group think" where people see credibility in numbers.|||Fallacious appeal to popularity.|||I would say because sometimes that is correct. I base my future purchases on how many people bought that item, which also correlates to how good the item is. So if many people are buying Sony, but few are buying Westinghouse, chances are good the Sony tv is the one to go with. Of course you are correct that many believers don't make it true, but I think people think that many people couldn't possibly be wrong. They would be wrong in that case.|||Another brilliant question.

I see it all the time, people repeating the same misconceptions over and over again, on websites even websites dedicated to providing accurate information! Yet because they can cite another source repeating their very own misconception they believe they are right, when I can prove they're 100% wrong, if they'd only think about their claims for 10 seconds.|||O.K, So you want people to go against each other, disagree with everything each other believes in and believe in totally different things? Independence is good, but "Group think" is a good thing. We need to have a common ground in order to survive, whenever it's trust in God or a believe for the greater good. If we never grouped together, how would we ever have organized hunting groups in order to take down prey like Mammoths?|||Conventional wisdom takes much misery to debunk.

Matt 5

10Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.|||Truly - people will believe ANYTHING. It's called "paranoia" - and it's a sneaking hunch that there's hidden forces everywhere, bla, bla, bla. So these people generally bounce from one idiot paranoid idea to the next - finally they fall on numerology for a while.|||There is probably an evolutionary reason here,in times of hardship or danger it was imperative that group solidarity was paramount. Now we have the luxury of being individuals but this hangover still exists...|||Well I have a brain and I use it all by myself. It works pretty good I must say. I dont care what the masses think or believe in.|||People are idiots, put very simple,,, notice how people in high school all wanna be part of one click so they like the same things, same concept...|||The herd instinct. If a number of people believe something to be right/wrong then I will remain anonymous and won't be noticed if I go along with them.|||It *does* increase the chance, but it doesn't prove something to be true.|||I don't know. I've never been one to follow the crowd.|||You know that 95% of all people believed the world was flat and those same people believe there is a god.

Isaiah 11:12 -- FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH.

Science -- must be a rectangle or square to have four corners i.e. Flat Earth

Revelation 7:1 -- angels standing on FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH (KJV)

Science -- must be a rectangle or square to have four corners i.e. Flat Earth

Job 38:13 -- ENDS OF THE EARTH

Science -- the earth is implied to be flat i.e. it had ends but sphere can have no ends

Jeremiah 16:19 -- ENDS OF THE EARTH

Science -- the earth is implied to be flat i.e. it had ends but sphere can have no ends

Daniel 4:11 -- ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH:

Science -- the earth is implied to be flat i.e. it had ends but sphere can have no ends

Daniel 4:10-11 -- The king "saw a tree of great height at the centre of the earth...reaching with its top to the sky and visible to the earth's farthest bounds."

Science -- this is impossible on a spherical earth, yet again they imply a flat earth

Matthew 4:8 -- Once again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their glory.

Science -- Obviously, this would be impossible unless the earth were flat.

Revelation 1:7: -- Behold, he is coming with the clouds! Every eye shall see him

Science -- Obviously, this would be impossible unless the earth were flat.

Chronicles 16:30: -- He has fixed the earth firm, immovable.

Psalm 93:1: -- Thou hast fixed the earth immovable and firm

Psalm 96:10: -- Thou has fixed the earth firm, immovable

Psalm 104:5: -- Thou didst fix the earth on its foundation so that it never can be shaken.

Isaiah 45:18: -- who made the earth and fashioned it, and himself fixed it fast

Samuel 2:8, 10 -- The foundations of the earth are the LORD's; upon them he has set the world...the LORD will judge the ends of the earth.

Science -- earth's rotation is 1000+ miles per hour and is rotating around the sun at just over 67,000 miles per hour. Approximately

Science -- earth quakes the earth can be shaken!! the earth is not fixed and not immovable!!!! ;-)|||"I have never understood "group think" where people see credibility in numbers."

Go home and LEARN DOME MATHS!!! YOU'RE EMBARASSING YOURSELF YOU FOOL!!|||WHEN MILLIONS SAY THEY ARE SAVED THAT IS a powerful witness to the truth!!!!!!!!|||I know. Numbers are so fake. God is the only thing real
